Thank you for doing this.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Welcome to Restrocast.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>George Kunnappally: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thank you for having me. And it&#8217;s an absolute pleasure to talk to you, Ashish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ashish Tulsian:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">George, so we all know that you are you know, you&#8217;re the one behind running and making Nando&#8217;s successful. You&#8217;re doing a great job there. But I would like to know and I would like to immediately dive into where it all started. So what&#8217;s, what&#8217;s your background? Where are you coming from and I&#8217;m not talking about, you know, your academics, or your but how did it, how did this happen? Because I also believe that a lot of people, you know, don&#8217;t enter hospitality<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">without a little bit of craziness in their head or it can be an accident. I have been an accidental, you know, hospitality or restaurant entrepreneur. But what&#8217;s your story?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>George Kunnappally:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, if there&#8217;s one word I have to use to define my journey so far, that would be serendipity.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it&#8217;s not just a single instance. It&#8217;s like a chain of events, all of which enabled me to get to this point. And I start from the time I was completing schooling in Thiruvananthapuram and my class was divided into engineering prospects and medicine prospects, and there were five or six of us, including my twin brother, who looks exactly like me, the identical who wanted to do something else that would get us away from our homes and make us financially independent<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at the earliest. So engineering in those days would take 5 to 7 years. And then you&#8217;re still hoping that the stream that you picked up five years ago is still in demand by the time you finish the program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ashish Tulsian: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scope is there or not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>George Kunnappally:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So you probably when you were entering the course, engineering telecommunication was the hottest stream. While by the time you passed out, chemical engineering could have been<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or would have been the hottest stream. So suddenly you are. Oh, my God. Now I need to<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">upskill again. And medicine was also running into seven years and eight years. And then you are still only in MBBS and you still need to do MD or DM the first years and it was still long before you were independent financially or even professionally. And that&#8217;s the time when our late father took us on a trip visiting all the major hotels and resorts in Kerala. It was one of his professional assignments and that gave us a window into the hospitality industry and we were quite enamored by the discipline, by the glamor and the tastefulness of the hotels and how everybody was always at their best in terms of service, putting in long hours. But they were also happy doing it. And it was something very different. And we came back from the trip and we explored how do you get into the industry? And there was a national entrance program that the Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology, which we appeared for and we cracked it and we got admissions into the institute in Kovalam and those were the days when you had this debate of whether a degree program is better than a diploma program. And in those days<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with the diploma program, you could indirectly do your Master&#8217;s. You had to still do a program<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side by side. So then we moved into Christ College, which is now Christ University in Bengaluru.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They had a bachelor and hotel management program. So both me and my brother joined,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">both of us enrolled and we completed that program and were hired on campus by Taj.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, my first deployment or assignment was at the Fisherman School in Chennai.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ashish Tulsian:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oh, nice. Yeah.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>George Kunnappally: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So I worked there for about two years and.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ashish Tulsian:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That&#8217;s a good property.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>George Kunnappally: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, it&#8217;s a fabulous property. But I realized pretty early that hotel is not my cup of tea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ashish Tulsian:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is which year?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>George Kunnappally:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">97 to 98. 99. Yeah.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It wasn&#8217;t the long hours or the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">location that worked<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">against my ambition or my aspirations.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was the fact that the growth curve<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inside the hotel industry, the time<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from being a supervisory trainee<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to being the general manager<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the property, in an ideal world<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">would be about 10 to 15 years.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I was like,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don&#8217;t have that much time.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And pretty early<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">every assignment that I was in<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or I was working for,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was always interested in<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how long would it take to get across<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that table<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and call that ambition or aspiration<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or genuine interest in knowing the career<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">growth curve.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oh, I got to work<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with some fabulous people<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and they were generous and benevolent.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it&#8217;s important because<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a lot of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">line managers<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are not expected to be benevolent.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They don&#8217;t need to share their knowledge<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or they don&#8217;t need to make it<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">easier for you<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because probably it wasn&#8217;t easy for them.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that&#8217;s something<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have taken with me all along that<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">my line managers were extremely generous.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What took them five years to learn?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They tried to impart that to me<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or transfer that knowledge to me<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in five months or two years.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I&#8217;ve been fortunate that way.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So I got an opportunity to come to Dubai<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because one of my first cousins here said,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why don&#8217;t you come down again?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I mentioned serendipity<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because it was initially offered<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to my brother and he said, I&#8217;m<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not interested in going to Dubai.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So then it came and he asked<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">me if Jules was not interested,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Would you like to come?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Said, Why not?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I knew nothing about Dubai<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other than the fact that<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a lot of people are doing well here<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the quality of life is good<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and it is safe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ashish Tulsian: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Was back in like 2000.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>George Kunnappally: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">98.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">99. And oh.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So there is history to this<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aspiration that<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Middle East<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the better quality of life.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s better money<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because we were born and raised<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in Tripoli, in Libya in the seventies.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My parents were both medical professionals<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working for the hospitals in Tripoli.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So once you are exposed to<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a foreign lifestyle<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or the quality of life, then<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">even when you come back to India,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you&#8217;re always looking for the next chance<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to get out.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or at least that&#8217;s been the case with me.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nothing adds up.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And you&#8217;re always comparing<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and it&#8217;s for good or for bad.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ashish Tulsian: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yeah.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>George Kunnappally: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was so happy to land in Dubai in 99<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and in those days<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the main newspapers, Khaleej<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Times and Gulf News<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">used to have an entire ten, 12,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15 page pullout called Appointments.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;m like, wow, so many jobs.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And many of them were restaurant<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">managers and catering managers<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and restaurant captains.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I was still thinking<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that I would get a job in a hotel.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So I constantly applied to all the Hiltons<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the Hyatts<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the Intercontinental Hotel.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I have some 23 odd rejection<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">letters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ashish Tulsian: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wow.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>George Kunnappally: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And all this.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ashish Tulsian: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What did you do?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>George Kunnappally: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So some of them just said,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we have it on file.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your profile doesn&#8217;t match.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And some of the interviews that<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">went so badly that I was beginning to<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">think, am I ever going to make it?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And in those days, my<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drop off and pick up point for my cousins<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and me was a building<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">called the Al Ain Center in Computer<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plaza, and I used to always stand<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in front of the restaurant called Subway,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and I used to think it\u2019s a QSR.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;m cut for five star deluxe properties.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;m going to join a five star deluxe property.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And towards the end of my three month<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">visit Visa,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I thought, Subway I hadn\u2019t tried for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a restaurant manager.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I applied not knowing<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that this is that Subway store<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because they were individually owned.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I get a call<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from my future employer Mr.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mahesh Shahdadpuri\u00a0 and I meet him<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in his office and in the first few<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exchanges he says,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My restaurant is in Al Ain Center.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s like, okay, I have seen it,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have been there.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it was a week<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">within which I landed that job<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and that was my first<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">permanent job in the UAE.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I set it off as.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ashish Tulsian: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was meant to be.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you are you standing there with us?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three months, three months?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>George Kunnappally: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;ve been in front of that restaurant<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and not ever considering<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dropping off my CV in that restaurant.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And all along they were looking to<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hire a new restaurant manager.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the restaurant manager who left that<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">job is today one of my closest friends.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was my first.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ashish Tulsian: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You replaced him?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>George Kunnappally:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I replaced him.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He did a fantastic handover and ever since<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we have been the best of friends.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And he moved on and he started his own<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">restaurant, kitchen equipment, business,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and we have worked together<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">multiple times and he continues to be<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a friend and a well-wisher.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it&#8217;s one of those relationships<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I cherish<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and again, coming back to chance,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">playing an important role,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I saw an ad for Bateaux Dubai<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the newspaper<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when it was just starting the project.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here. Bateaux Dubai<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a joint venture between Sodexo,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which is Bateaux Parisien <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the Dutco group of hotels, that<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which is the Jebel Ali International Hotels. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So they were building a vessel here.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was a restaurant<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cruise boat, similar to the ones in Paris<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or London or New York.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I thought the ad and I said,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this is not for me because I don&#8217;t have<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fine dining experience.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So I did not apply.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And this friend of mine<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">picked up the newspaper and came to me<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and said, No, you need to apply to this.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I said, It&#8217;s just a waste of time.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look at the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">six, seven, eight things they have asked,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and I don&#8217;t tick any one of them.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ashish Tulsian: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What? What was it?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>George Kunnappally: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fine dining experience, several years<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and you must have been in<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not in QSR and you should have been<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">running a bigger business.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s a 260 seater river<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cruise with licenses and I am running<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2 to 3<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">subway stores in Dubai<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and it&#8217;s such a small business.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So I personally felt<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it&#8217;s just not going to work. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The surprise is<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when I got a call from<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but otherwise the office and Mr.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patrice<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also was the managing partner at that<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">time, called me and said, Can we meet?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I thought, he must be meeting<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50 candidates and it&#8217;s just a tick box.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So I went and met him<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and three meetings later he said,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don&#8217;t tick all the boxes, but<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I still want to take a chance with you.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I said it&#8217;s a massive project.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You really want to do that? He said,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I know what I am hiring because<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;ve done this a lot in my life now.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was certainly a very senior person, so<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I joined and it was<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an extremely interesting opportunity.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So it was the first time<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was working outside my comfort zone<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the vessel was built here.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the stakeholders were French.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We had a Moroccan sales<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and marketing manager.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We had our HR head from Seychelles.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We had projects head<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the kitchen head from France.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So and about 20,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25 different nationalities.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We hired everybody here.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was managing operations,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">technical entertainment and the kitchen.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was surreal,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but it was my first taste of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">something bigger than a QSR.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ashish Tulsian: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oh, way bigger, actually.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>George Kunnappally: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yeah, way bigger than a QSR.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I never expected it to happen, but<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that gave me the confidence<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to actually look at bigger things.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while I was in Subway<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or probably while I was in Bateaux Dubai,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there was a newspaper article<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about Al Madani group signing up.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charley\u2019s Philly Steaks.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I&#8217;m like,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is so close to Subway.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So if I am going to reach out to them, I&#8217;m<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">going to get this job.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I applied.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I actually didn&#8217;t apply.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I found Mr.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Madani&#8217;s email address,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who was the chairman and CEO, and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I emailed him my resume saying, I am<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the man you&#8217;re looking for.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I was shell shocked<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when I didn&#8217;t get a callback<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or even an email acknowledgment.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So I continued with Bateaux Dubai<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and then Bateaux Dubai changed<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hands, and I took up an interim<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consulting role with Mr.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ismail Takriti. And as fate would have it,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samari, Samari\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">local sponsor was also Al Madani<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but related to the Mohammed Al Mad,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">so Samari was not taking off.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I got a call from Mr.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Madini&#8217;s office about one and a half<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">years after I had applied for the role,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">saying, can you meet with us?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I said, What happened?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You guys having taken off or you hired<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">somebody and that didn&#8217;t work out.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I said, can you please come and meet us?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I was in Ibn Battuta mall<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">buying a suitcase<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to relocate to Kuwait for Nathan\u2019s.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ashish Tulsian: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oh, yeah.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>George Kunnappally: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And Nathan&#8217;s had given me a US visa<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to go for the franchisee training.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the Kuwait based Nathan&#8217;s business<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was still to step forward.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three steps backward.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They were still not clear,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">should there shouldn&#8217;t be.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But I was ready to fly up<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and I met the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">right hand man<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of you can say of Mr.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Madani, you<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the initial conversation,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he says, Do you have a US visa?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I said, yes. He calls Mr.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Madani.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And says that this gentleman in front of me<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has a US visa.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He can fly tomorrow<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to complete the franchise<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">training program, which is a book asset<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for taking the franchise forward.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So the US visa, which I got from.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His. Employer, finally<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">became useful to land this job<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because I was immediately<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taken to meet Mr.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Madani. And in an hour&#8217;s time<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was employed<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and in a week&#8217;s time I left for the US,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for the Charley&#8217;s<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Philly Steaks franchise training.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So if it is not a chance and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">destiny you wouldn&#8217;t really be able<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to connect all these dots.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oh, so I have another interesting story.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let&#8217;s park Charley&#8217;s Philly Steaks here.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I had just resigned from Subway<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after three years,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and I was taking up an interim assignment<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in Kampala<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to set up an Indian restaurant<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for a known operator of mine.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We were neighbors in Al Ain Center because<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">my New Zealand migration was ready.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I had finished the medical such as.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just waiting for the stamp and the Subway.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">guys in New Zealand had told me that<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if you come in we can find a spot for you.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I was single at that time<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and during the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">notice period, two weeks into my notice<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">period,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am going into my corporate head office<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and I meet this lady who has been there<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for more than three months.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But that&#8217;s the first time<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I saw her in the office.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, I go to the office almost every week<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and I fell in love.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It took me two weeks to basically propose.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She said no. Then she said yes.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I said,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you say no, I&#8217;m going to Kampala.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you say yes,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;ll find a way to stay back.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whatever happens<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to New Zealand. Let it go and start from zero.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She later said yes.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So all in a matter of like my notice<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">period is coming to an end for<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I need to go back<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and tell my employer, Mr.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mahesh, that, wow, you know what, boss?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I decided to stay.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I stayed<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one more year and they were gracious<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and obviously they didn&#8217;t know that.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I found out.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The real. Reason.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But later, when they attended my wedding,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they said, When did this start?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I said,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you first met us in the Subway store,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they all used to come to lunch<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because our offices were closed.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But so even my bosses used to come down<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for lunch and they used to wonder,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what&#8217;s this lady<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">every other day in the store?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And they used to think,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">okay, it&#8217;s close by.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everybody comes for lunch.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So it could be a coincidence.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But now when they look back, they&#8217;re like,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oh, okay, we facilitated this.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I&#8217;m like, yes, you did.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So my<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">life has been entirely about<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unexpected circumstances,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leading to something<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extremely helpful and joyful for me<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all my life.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I mean, all my working life<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and my personal life are<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extremely intertwined,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and some of the best friendships<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;ve made are from my work because for me,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I really don&#8217;t understand<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the work life balance argument<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because for me, life is work.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yeah,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: phenomenal, we talked about it<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and I would love to actually, you know,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">talk more about that.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That&#8217;s so true.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think, you know,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I actually I wonder this often<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and especially nowadays<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when you go to LinkedIn or,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you know, last two years of Covid<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people went through<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">so much of it, a mental,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you know, mental health issues, etc.,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that probably I think people are always<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">going through all that stuff.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But I think during COVID times, it<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">just blew up in like in communication.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, you know, and every time I see people<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">talking about how to get work<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">life balance, I&#8217;m like, oh my God,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they&#8217;re<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not going to find this in this lifetime<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because because if your work<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is so<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is so bad<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that you&#8217;re not able to call it life.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, then you&#8217;re screwed basically 100%.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>George Kunnappally: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And if you&#8217;re happy with what you&#8217;re doing<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or if you&#8217;re<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, I&#8217;m somebody who wakes up every day<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and craves to go to work.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that&#8217;s not because I am running away<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from home.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s because that&#8217;s very much a part of.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who I am running away from home.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get out of it for me.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wherever I have the flexibility,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wherever I&#8217;ve worked,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;ve had the flexibility<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to get out of the office<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and go for a drive to clear your head<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or meet a friend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ashish Tulsian: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the day.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>George Kunnappally: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During office hours, during weekdays.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So that also gives me the flexibility<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to attend office calls at 8 p.m.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or move my dinner beyond and take a call<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or finish emails at five in the morning<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because I&#8217;m not really differentiated<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">between the work part<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the life part, because work is<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">life and a large part of my<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stakeholders<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in my life are from my place of work.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I met my wife in my place of work,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">my closest friends,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if you can say four<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or five of them, are all from work<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, work has probably given me more<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">than what any other avenue has given me.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ashish Tulsian: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">George, as in,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you know, as an, as an operator.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And you, you know,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you very humbly mentioned,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you know, multiple times<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that, you know, entrepreneur versus<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a salaried professional.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I and I appreciate that nuance because<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because of course, like you are, you know,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;m sure life occurs way differently<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to these, you know, two individuals.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I&#8217;ve always been an entrepreneur.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I mean, I started my first venture<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when I was in college, so technically<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nobody gave me a job ever.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, you know,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">within that,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think I can tell you that I&#8217;ve grown,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you know, as an entrepreneur<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or as a person to honestly,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you know, appreciate the entrepreneurs,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you know, people<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who are actually entrepreneurial, who,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you know, to me today,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the definition of entrepreneurship is,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you know, living all the adrenaline<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the rush<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you know, the glamor around the aside.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think for me, entrepreneurship<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">today is actually the ownership piece,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which is which is largely the mentality,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which is a mindset.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, you know, if you own<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your piece of work very, very well,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it doesn&#8217;t matter how large an outfit<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you are part or a small part of it.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I mean, you you may be a cog in the wheel,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but you&#8217;re an important cog<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and your importance is defined by<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what&#8217;s your mindset. True.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You lead as a leader,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you know, and I see that you&#8217;re<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you know,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you&#8217;re really entrepreneurial in your,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you know, in your attitude<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and your mindset.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also discuss and able to kind of,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you know, talk about that little<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what is entrepreneurial mindset to you?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how do you look at life as a leader<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and what parts do you believe,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you know, the ownership?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the best way<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to show that ownership<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like when you work with your teams<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or well, what have you learned in life<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with these people<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who are high ownership people?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I&#8217;m assuming<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that you were extremely high ownership<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in all the roles, and that&#8217;s exactly why<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what you&#8217;ve been calling luck and tons,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think I think it was just a.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>George Kunnappally: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">so I&#8217;ve always known that I don&#8217;t have<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the ability<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to do what you do in the sense<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">build a business from scratch<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and build a team and invest your money<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and take those risks.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So I also had huge respect<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for entrepreneurs<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because many of them are not in it<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for the money.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obviously businesses make money. If<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they are profitable they are scalable,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but many of them could have stopped it<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or not<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gone that big.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But they&#8217;re in it because they&#8217;re<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">passionate and that&#8217;s the only thing<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they know<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the sense they are creators<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of solutions,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">creators of project, creators of wealth,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and because of them, people like me<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who are more risk averse<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are salaried career professionals.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So we have an opportunity.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So we are able to support them<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in scaling up their vision<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or in achieving their vision.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So I&#8217;m always thankful<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for the fact that all my employers,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which were mostly business<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">owners themselves,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">so I&#8217;ve mostly worked for smaller<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">businesses and I&#8217;m reporting to the owner.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So you tend to become family over a period<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of time and it&#8217;s always<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worked to my advantage that<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">while I am not an investing entrepreneur,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have an owner\u2019s mindset<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when it comes to running the business<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and when I am building a team,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am looking for the same quality<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in my function heads and in my excellent team.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And simple example,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;ll give two examples.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One is when it comes to decision making.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So I have this rule of thumb<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that whenever I am making a big decision<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which has a monetary impact<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or even a qualitative impact, and the data<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or the reports<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or the feasibility studies are not<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">crystal clear.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And even if they are crystal clear,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that&#8217;s a lot of money<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or a lot at stake qualitatively.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I basically look at it that if this is<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">my business, what would the decision be?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You know,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I may choose the more expensive contractor<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or I may go with a qualitative benefit.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But I try to disconnect and think,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if this<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">entire business was mine,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what would my decision be?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, that gives a level of clarity which<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you don&#8217;t have otherwise.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And once I&#8217;ve made that decision,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;m clear.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My conscience is clear.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whichever way that decision goes that<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I took this call.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the owner\u2019s mindset,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I didn&#8217;t take this call<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as a salaried resource<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thinking it&#8217;s already 6:00\u2019o clock. I got to rush.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ashish Tulsian: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or my incentive is going to be<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">same.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>George Kunnappally: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is going to be the same.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or let&#8217;s,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">let&#8217;s give this to the cheapest window<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because that means<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">my incentive will be higher.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yeah, yeah, I have,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ashish Tulsian: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I look good on the balance sheet.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exactly.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>George Kunnappally: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So I&#8217;ve,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;ve always looked with that in mind<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that whenever it&#8217;s a difficult<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">call, let&#8217;s move everything away<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and think if this was my money,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what would the decision be?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then go all in.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I also have a problem with<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">key leadership<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not having an entrepreneurial mindset,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">even if they are doing the right things<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at the right time.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, simple example.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I keep pulling<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">my team&#8217;s legs saying that<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if you are somebody who has 8<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to 10 coffees on a weekday,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I would assume we would have<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the same number on your weekly off<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which is also need not be on the weekend<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">could be on one of the weekdays<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if that number is any less.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That&#8217;s not an owner\u2019s mindset.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are all super careful<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about switching off<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">every light bulb and the water heater<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as soon as we have left the room at home.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s not because those pennies<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are going to pinch us, but it&#8217;s been<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inculcated in us from childhood<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that when you leave the kitchen,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">switch off the light, when you leave<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the bedrooms, switch off the AC<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but when you leave the conference room,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you don&#8217;t switch off the lights.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you leave the office toilet,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you don&#8217;t switch off the light.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Actually pains me.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;m like, okay, you would have done that<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if this was your business, right?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ashish Tulsian: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Was such a such<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>George Kunnappally: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a, you know, something small.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ashish Tulsian: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yeah, it looks small.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But I mean, it&#8217;s a very deep insight into,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you know, what occurs to you.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You know, how life is occurring<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to you. Correct? Right.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that also, you know,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">goes back into that work life balance.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right. If you took office,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not a part of your life,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it actually starts showing from there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>George Kunnappally: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And why are we differentiating so much?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because this eight or 10 hours in<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the office is actually,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to be blunt, funding the rest of the body.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yeah.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At least for an expat salary.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And career professional.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is what is funding your weekends<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and your holidays and your children&#8217;s<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">education and your lifestyle.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ashish Tulsian: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And what you&#8217;ve been calling life.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>George Kunnappally: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What you have been calling life.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So then shouldn&#8217;t you be more respectful<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and appreciative of that work<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Component in your life?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And doesn&#8217;t your employers<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deserve that much or.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think they do, yeah. Yeah.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that&#8217;s always driven<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all my assignments with<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all these fabulous, generous people.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So even if you take off from Mr.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Madani, I left Mr.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Madani to<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">join BinHendi.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, that was not even two years,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but two years can be a lifetime<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because it was a massive learning<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">curve for me, because BinHendi enterprise<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was huge.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And among the many things<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that we learned in that role<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with my boss, Mr.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tim Fagan, or with the President<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">himself, must have Mr. BinHendi<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at a time when<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were no major F&amp;B brands in the market.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mr. BinHendi had the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">audacity in a positive sense, had the guts<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to roll out one F&amp;B brand after the other,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whether it was a Japengo cafe,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a Cafe Havana, China Times,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which became landmarks<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that I remember<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cafe Havana and Data City Center<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">before the smoking in public places<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ban came in,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">always had a cue<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the VVIPs in town waiting for a table.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Japengo in Palm<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strip used to be always packed<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">584 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China Times and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they had a City Center again<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or Mini Chinese Central were landmarks.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So you were way ahead of the curve<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to launch all these concepts<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and put your heart and resources into it<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and make them success stories.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the easier way<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">out would have been to pick up a franchise<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like Hugo Boss, which he had,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or a Porsche design, which he had.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But when it came to F&amp;B,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he was passionate about food<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and he was passionate about fishing,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and he built an F&amp;B business from scratch.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that was impressive for me.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it&#8217;s the first time I was working for<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a large conglomerate<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with a regional footprint.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And from there I went to<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADNOC distribution in Abu Dhabi,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which was a consultant role.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And everybody in my family thought,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is where I am going to retire<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because it&#8217;s government,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it&#8217;s set back and.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ashish Tulsian: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oh, what, what was it?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And what is the role?.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>George Kunnappally: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senior franchise business specialist?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was a mandate to franchise<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the gas stations regionally, globally,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with all the other inserts,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the convenience<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">store,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the new station and the food court. And<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there wasn&#8217;t<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anybody with an oil and gas<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">franchise background available.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So the nearest they could get was somebody<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with the F&amp;B franchise background.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So after<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">18 months of official<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recruitment process, I joined them<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for a two and a half year stint<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because there were months when<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I didn&#8217;t have anything to do.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oh. Except. So, ADNOC distribution<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before they were listed<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was a public service utility,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which is a budgeted loss making entity<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because fuel was subsidized.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So there&#8217;s only so much you can do.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And by the time I left,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the fuel subsidies were removed.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then there was no real reason<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to franchise the business because now<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it&#8217;s a very profitable business.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then they went public.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And today, ADNOC distribution<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a hugely profitable and prestigious<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flagship asset for the UAE.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But I, coming from a private<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">entity background where<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I always worked for private companies,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there&#8217;s a lot of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">effort and your staffing<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is always badly adequate.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So you have to heavylift<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">across departments and everybody<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is heavy lifting<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and everybody is working their backs off<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to be able to achieve numbers<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and to be profitable.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then you go into government and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I realized that it was too slow for me.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I mean, no offense to them, but I was even<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thinking, oh, I&#8217;m going to retire here.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My kids are going to get into petroleum<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and steel.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They&#8217;re going to join ADNOC in future.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And this is one<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">happy retirement life again.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But in six months<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was so bored and under, you know.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ashish Tulsian: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think I think the new work for<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you know, I think the pace of smaller<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">companies<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and especially you&#8217;re working<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with the entrepreneurs themselves, right.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So I think the decision making<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or the hustle and.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>George Kunnappally: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hustle that&#8217;s that&#8217;s that&#8217;s addictive.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the fact that you are working with<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people who have actually put money<\/span> <span creative person. True.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So I ask this question<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">do you know a lot of people that<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in fact, I would love to ask you as well<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that if like now that you know yourself,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">now you know, what are your strong suits,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your weaknesses, things You like<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doing things you don&#8217;t like doing<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and things you know are intuitively good at.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like you&#8217;re absolutely confident<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that you&#8217;ll you&#8217;ll go<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and you&#8217;ll, you know, you&#8217;ll be there.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You&#8217;ll throw a great show<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if I transferred<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exactly the same abilities<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and same weaknesses and same personality.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But I&#8217;ll ask you to take tangentially<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our profession,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like not F&amp;B, not restaurants,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not hospitality,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but something you know, in<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some tangentially out world.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do you think?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using the same skills and exactly<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the man you are, what would that be?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>George Kunnappally: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So I.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;ve always believed that I don&#8217;t come<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with any specific skill sets,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and I don&#8217;t mean that<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in a superbly humble way.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What I mean is the self-awareness is such<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that we did talk about this earlier<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also that I don&#8217;t come from Ivy League<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">education and I am not trilingual<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and it&#8217;s not you walk into a room<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and all eyes are on you,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kind of six foot personality<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and husky voice.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And so<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the skill sets that I have probably shared<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by at least a<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at least a thousand people in this market.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Okay.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I probably know 300 or 400 of them<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">myself.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are, they are my peer group.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the people I look up to and people<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who are coming up the ranks. And<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">so that&#8217;s their luck<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and right time, right place and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you click with the employer.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like in every job I have landed,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I always had that meeting<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with the employer who&#8217;s the chairman<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or the CEO or the founder of the company.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And in an hour or two, both of you<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recognize that there is that connect<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and now the education<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the experience are secondary or<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they are willing to take a chance on you<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">many a time.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though there were better<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">qualified candidates.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that&#8217;s probably<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I would define it as luck.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They would define it as cultural fit or<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the entrepreneurial mindset<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that we are talking about<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or the owners mindset.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So I remember so<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I always thought if I didn&#8217;t get into F&amp;B,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what would I really like doing?<\/span> style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and I am fully conscious of the fact<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that while we salaried career<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">professionals are told me<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that since you don&#8217;t have any<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">major qualifications or qualities,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">try to stick to revenue generating roads<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like so.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So the message in no uncertain terms<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was as long as you&#8217;re making money<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for your employer,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you will be the last one to be fired.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But I would strongly recommend<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that you don&#8217;t think about<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">qualitative function since<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you are not God&#8217;s gift to mankind.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So I have taken that to my heart<\/span> Go getters. Yep.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generalist go getters actually<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prosper more than the career than lousy<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">specialists.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">100%.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if you are somebody<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who I tasked with anything and whether you<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are skilled at that or not,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but I know that you will get shit done.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a way higher chance<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that you know you will prosper more.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though I know that you are<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not the specialist<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and you may not be my first choice<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like the logical mind,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but I would say, know what?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This specialist may screw up, right?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because they don&#8217;t like<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they will not be able to understand<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the variable that pops up in the moment.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>George Kunnappally:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> So there is always people in your system<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they may not hold the big titles,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but they are closers.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yeah. They take up a task and you know,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whatever said and done,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they will complete the task. Yes.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And you,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they may not be sophisticated resources,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but if you tell them I need this, this<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and this done by this day,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they won&#8217;t<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">come back to you till it&#8217;s done.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And nine out of ten times<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they achieve it within that timeframe.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet they may not be a specialist.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They may not have the higher levels<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the organizational structure,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but they are fixers and closers<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and they are as important to the business<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as your senior leadership<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or restaurant level leadership.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ashish Tulsian:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Or even the boss,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the biggest specialist in the system.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because because for that invention<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or for that great work<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to see the light of the day, you need a closer and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a fixer at the front<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and if they are not there.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>George Kunnappally:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> And identifying them<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">within your organization,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when you are joining a new organization<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is probably a big test of leadership.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And another thing that I have noticed is<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">making a difference.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leading well, transforming<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is probably one of the bigger tests<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of leadership than actually achieving<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sales targets and bottom lines.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because at least in my career,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;ve mostly been hired<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to either scale up business or to clean up<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">somebody else&#8217;s mess or<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">so you&#8217;re normally joining<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">either a startup business<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or you are joining a business<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which is going through<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a phase of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stag.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s become stagnant or it&#8217;s losing money,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and then you&#8217;re brought in to basically<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">see whether it can have another run<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at profitability by implementing<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some quick tasks.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s a clean up or a turnaround task.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So I&#8217;ve rarely been hired by a business<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which is rocking.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And George,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you just have to keep it steady.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And we are going to be well for it.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;m still looking for that kind of a role.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will be you got<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you got one you resigned mean so you<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your retirement plans really.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seriously<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I should have just sat there and retired<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">so so I&#8217;ve always enjoyed the fact<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that you are<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">probably somebody&#8217;s last option<\/span> <span See.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>George Kunnappally:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The world is dominated by men<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the kitchens are dominated by men.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But we still have a lot of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">highly qualified and accomplished<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">female chefs today<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coming up and taking their space.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it&#8217;s rightfully so.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But historically,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the F&amp;B sector was dominated by men.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But that&#8217;s changing now.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And unless we consciously<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">make an effort, I&#8217;m<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not a believer in mission statements<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and placards.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You&#8217;ve got to do it. HR, for example.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Predominantly women.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why can&#8217;t IT be a lady or work on supply<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chain be a lady like on marketing,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">marketing or PR<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">roles are predominantly women.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why can&#8217;t it be women like on operations<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be a lady?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have worked in organizations where<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women have been.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ashish Tulsian:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Why do you think?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why do you think that happens?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>George Kunnappally:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The feeling that, oh,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it takes long hours or no,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they may have other commitments. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But I see my wife as an entrepreneur.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She&#8217;s a homemaker.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She gave up a career in marketing<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to be with the kids and run the home.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if I were to look at my home<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as a startup,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when we started building the family,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">so she used to be a supply chain manager.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She&#8217;s a repairs and maintenance manager,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">she&#8217;s the manager.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She manages the home finance<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, what do I manage?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pretty,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">very little<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and I&#8217;m managing somebody else&#8217;s business.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So I honestly don&#8217;t have skin in the game.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The investor has skin in the game.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So I used to tell my team your risk is<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two months salary. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His risk is probably his entire life.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So in that respect,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">my wife&#8217;s risk is far greater<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if she fails in her assignment,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which is the whole entrepreneurship<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with the kids<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and with the in-laws and her family<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and friends and the whole nine yards.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The risks are far higher than mine.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I can get up and say it&#8217;s not working.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apply for a few more jobs.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swing one move on. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like yourself. Yeah. And the CHRO was<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A male.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And i still haven&#8217;t been able<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to get my head around that,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but this is what my experience.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is. By, by seven<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or eight years of age.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yeah, and it&#8217;s a string of incidents.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what I took from that was<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I read this long before I became a parent.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yeah. So<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I wanted to curate<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a set of experiences for my children<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or for my family<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that would mold their future worldview<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and to avoid any of those small<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">untoward incidents which can<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which may look immaterial today<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but could still leave<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a lasting impression on a five year old<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or a six year old or a seven year old.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So I am extremely conscious about<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the environment my kids are growing up.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My wife Nita was born and raised in Dubai. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So She&#8217;s a Dubai kid,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but we&#8217;re both very conscious about<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shielding<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our kids and giving them the right life<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experiences as they grow up.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So they become well-rounded individuals<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and their worldview is not skewed<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because of that one particular instance,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which is probably<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how many of us grew up because we didn&#8217;t<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have that kind of shielding.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So our worldview about many subjects<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is based on what we experience<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when we were five years old or ten years<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">old, and nothing much has changed<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because it&#8217;s entrenched<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deep inside your psyche.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ashish Tulsian:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You know, a lot nowadays.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I actually think about this one thing<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that one is that, you know, the shielding<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mechanism or, you know, if if parents<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are not thinking through exactly that way.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But I think another another thing is that,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you know, when we grew up, as,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you know, our our childhood,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the global exposure also was limited.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I mean, it was limited.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It wasn&#8217;t almost there. So and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">travel experience was also,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you know, very,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">very shielded in the sense that you,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you know, only travel to certain places,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">either your relatives or,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you know, for your religious purpose,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or even if you go to holidays,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it&#8217;ll be a set structure.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Structure, right? Yeah.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I actually wasn&#8217;t that.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I find that nowadays the kids who are,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you know, the Gen Z, people who were born<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like after 2005<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who are today already 17 and that hurts.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But they have this access<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which is super global.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yeah. You know,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">these are the kids who are not<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">being I mean, they&#8217;re not growing up<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in a country or a city.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They&#8217;re growing up on the world stage.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That they are literally<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">growing on the Internet and then know<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and they see so much. True, I don&#8217;t know<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what will that result into, but in here.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But I believe I believe that a large part<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of that impact on personality<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can also come from the fact<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that one situation<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or one experience may not actually,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you know,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">push you back or,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you know, stay with you enough<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because you now have this exposure<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where you can actually compare notes<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and you can say that oh okay this happened<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">today or with me by chance.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But this is not the world order, correct?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because most of the incidents that shaped<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">us were also like, oh, is this<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this is the world order.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then we yeah, then we figured. The internet took over.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And before Netflix took over.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>George Kunnappally: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I would agree with that.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it is also a parent&#8217;s fear<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that while they have access<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to all this technology,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what we discuss and the situations<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we expose our children<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to need to be constructive and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they should not be left to<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interpretation. So George.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You know, a lot has been said about the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aggregate as being the boon or the bane.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, you know, COVID times accelerated<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deliveries, accelerated aggregate<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">businesses.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yeah, it was going I mean, restaurant<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">owners on one side were grateful for<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the fact that they exist and the logistics<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">businesses delivery to exist.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And on the other side,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">these guys have bitten into the bottom<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">line like negative impact.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the bottom<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">line is not even like a serious one.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I feel today<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we are talking about this August of 2022.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looks like the world has settled<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your past COVID.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What&#8217;s your take on aggregators today?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You know, in August of \u201822<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what do you feel about this?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>George Kunnappally: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My take on aggregators<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have always been consistent.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are an essential of the ecosystem<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we have.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can&#8217;t blame the aggregator because<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the customer wants to use the aggregate.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yeah, very strong<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brands are today on the aggregators<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because they are not able to generate<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that traffic on their own platforms.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We thought multiple times<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to develop our own mobile app<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only to realize that it<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">while it is a good thing to have<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the bulk of the orders,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thanks to the UAE, lifestyle<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is going to be on the Talabat,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the Deliveroo and the Zomato.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ashish Tulsian: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the only way, by the way,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">across the world. I have not seen any country<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where any brand succeeded<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">now in getting major orders.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>George Kunnappally: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And when operators<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">complain about the aggregator commissions,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have one question to ask.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you know what does it cost to deliver<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">through your own channel<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">using your own driver?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most operators don&#8217;t have a clear number<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we have, so we are on aggregators<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because one, it is<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">almost the same cost<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or slightly cheaper be on an aggregator.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It takes away the headache from us<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because they are the experts.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They take care of the logistics,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they generate the order.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UAE population<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loves to be on aggregators, so<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it works for everybody.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But again, even though aggregators<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are private-equity backed<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and probably not all of them are profit<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">driven, they are transaction driven.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Big data has a different valuation game<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and all that.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ashish Tulsian: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">None of them are profitable and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don&#8217;t think they will be in the near future.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>George Kunnappally: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the near future<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and they are comfortable with that.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Okay. So<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if your transaction value is very low<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and your transaction count<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is also very low,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you will have to pay<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">top dollar to the aggregate.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, is it cheaper for you<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to deliver yourselves?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then why don&#8217;t you deliver yourselves?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If it is not<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the need to work on your average<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transaction value or on the number of orders<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because the number one metric<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is every transaction value.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So if you look at Nando&#8217;s, we don&#8217;t do<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the kind of numbers that many QSR brands<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">do in terms of transaction count,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but our ATV is significantly high,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which means any aggregator<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">makes money on delivering a Nando&#8217;s order.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So we get attractive rates<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">now on a 100 dirham order of Nando&#8217;s.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are charging 20%. That&#8217;s $20.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, if your TV is only 30 dirhams,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">even at 40%, what are you making?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yeah, he is still losing money. style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The agreements with aggregators<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allow you to price<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the menu<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lower on your website or your mobile app<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only in<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the UAE and probably in the region.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the aggregator agreements<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prevent us from doing that.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Personally, I believe the government<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is already getting involved because<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aggregators are very much a part<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the essential services,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if you can say,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and whether it&#8217;s a driver rights<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or whether it is welfare or whether it&#8217;s<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how they are conducting their business,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the regulators are still<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">actively involved and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whether it&#8217;s from the handling of food<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or whether it&#8217;s<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from the managing of the drivers<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or the business relationship as such.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And these are big players<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and they are critical to the ecosystem.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But I would, I had a good laugh<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because I was talking<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to one of the aggregators<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and I said, you know, in the middle of COVID, or as we are all coming out of COVID,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if you guys pick up a<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">perceived-to-be super expensive<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brand ambassador,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the feeling that normal operators have is<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they have so much money to pay this<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sportsmen<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">why can&#8217;t they reduce my commission?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or if you are taking up so much of outdoor<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">advertising space in the middle of COVID<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or as we come out of COVID<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and we are all crying for reduced fees<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">while you are going on an advertising<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spend spree,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the general feeling is<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we are not in this together.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So you probably need to look at that<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from a PR perspective<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and say the timing or the or the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it was tone deaf or to an extent, but<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am personally<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a supporter of the aggregator.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;m not so much a supporter<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of aggregators running their own kitchens.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yeah, but that&#8217;s.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ashish Tulsian: <\/b><span
